“Oh, my God!” Mutti cried the minute I stepped from the Union Pacific in Los Angeles. “This is terrible! I should never have let you go to Denmark. You must start a diet right away! How could you have let this happen?”

I had returned from Denmark with puffy cheeks and tight-fitting clothes revealing the thirty extra pounds I had gained while away. Like a deflating balloon, all self-confidence plummeted and I stood on the train platform speechless with no place to hide. Underneath every pretense, my visit to Denmark had become one of sadness and solitude. I had always hidden my emotions when Pappi did not come back, and now, after a summer of reliving the old memories, an ugly weight of thirty pounds became my only gain. The truth could not be hidden. I was fat!

“You’ll eat nothing but green grapes for the next three days,” Mutti said with a firm resolve. “I’ve read about a special diet of grapes. You’ve just one week before the new semester at Stanford begins. We must start immediately.”

Feeling fat and reeling from Mutti’s words, I ate nothing but green grapes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, morning, noon, and night for three days and lost some weight but not enough. Having wasted my precious savings from previous summer jobs on that ill-fated trip to Denmark, I returned to Stanford a week later, a bloated aimless junior in ill-fitting clothes—and Bob would be back on campus this new semester.
